Algiz (ᛉ) is the fifteenth rune in the Norse Futhark runic alphabet and represents the sound z. It also represents the concepts of elk, resembling its antlers. Elks were well known for being able to defend themselves, so the rune is also associated with protection.
Algiz is famously the rune that is used repeatedly to create the protective magical runic stave Aegishjalmur, also known as the Helm of Awe. Draw it on your forehead in blood or wear it in metal, and you will have the strength to defeat your opponents, or die honorable in the process and be welcomed into Valhalla.

Algiz is also the seventh rune in the second aett. The Norse runes are divided into three eight-rune families, which represent distinct themes. The second aett is ruled by Heimdall and represents challenge, transformation, and disruption.
In divination, the Algiz rune is about protection. It is both defensive, as you set up strong boundaries to protect yourself, and offensive, as you strike first to get the initiative. Algiz is also a spiritual rune, linked to how we connect with our ancestors and the divine.
The Algiz rune is linked with Heimdall, the ever-vigilant watch guard of the gods, who is the first line of defence against any attack on Asgard. It is also linked with Odin, who grants victory in battle, and the Valkyries, the fearsome divine shieldmaidens who ensure that Odin’s will is fulfilled in battle, and collect the souls of the bravest fallen warriors to take to Valhalla.

Algiz Rune Poems
Our understanding of the Old Norse runes comes from rune poems, which provide explanatory stanzas for each letter. There are Norwegian, Icelandic, and Anglo-Saxon poems for many runes, but only the Anglo-Saxon poem survives for the Algiz rune.
Anglo-Saxon
The elk-sledge usually lives in the fen, growing in the water. It wounds severely, staining with blood any man who makes a grab at it.
The poem points to the effectiveness of good protection that combines both offensive and defensive elements. The elk also works with its natural environment, exploiting the fen in its natural habitat as camouflage.
Algiz in Divination

In divination practices, the Algiz rune represents protection, boundaries, and higher awareness.
- Protection – the rune can suggest that you need to protect yourself, physically or spiritually, from attacks on your energy and peace; it often suggests that you need to set firmer boundaries

The position of the runestone in relation to the reader influences the reading:
- Upright: The Algiz rune can suggest that you do more to protect your physical and spiritual space from those who do not place the same value on it as you
- Merkstave (reversed): Algiz suggests that you are neglecting clear signals of danger, and it is leaving you vulnerable
- Sideways: In this case, the Algiz rune suggests you need to reconsider where you are sourcing and directing your energy
How it should be read also depends on where it falls in relation to other runes.
