Kenaz – Norse Rune Meaning

Kenaz (ᚲ) is the sixth rune in the Norse Futhark runic alphabet and represents the phonetic sound K. It also means torch or knowledge.

The Kenaz rune points towards the torch of knowledge and the fire of creativity, and points at knowledge gained through illumination. It is often linked to a period of learning, teaching, or creativity that sees knowledge transformed into something tangible. It can also often help you find your way out of a dark place, into the light.

The Kenaz rune is linked to the fire giant Surtr. He is the king of Muspelheim, the primordial land of fire. He was trapped there by Odin and his brothers when they created the world, and he sits at the opening to his world, waiting for his opportunity to escape. He is destined to escape at Ragnarok, when he will fight with Freyr to mutual destruction and set much of the world on fire with his flaming sword.

Kenaz Rune Poems

Our understanding of the Old Norse runes comes from rune poems, which provide explanatory stanzas for each letter. There are Norwegian, Icelandic, and even Anglo-Saxon poems for each rune.

Norwegian:

Sore is the curse of children; grief makes a man pale.

Icelandic:

Sore is the bale of children, and a scourge, and the house of rotten fish

Anglo-Saxon:

Torch is to every living person known by its fire, it is clear and bright and it usually burns when the althings rest inside the hall.

Kenaz represents the torch, but can also represent its harmful aspect, which is a sore or inflammation. The torch is controlled fire, focused for a purpose, but it is important to remember that a fire can easily grow out of control.

Kenaz in Divination

In divination practices, the Kenaz rune can have several meanings:

  • Light and Learning – the light of learning that offers clarity of thought and purpose, it also represents knowledge that can offer a way out of darkness and into the light
  • Creativity – the power to take knowledge and create something more than was there before
  • Transformation and Healing – fire can hurt, but it is also cleansing, burning away what is no longer needed to allow healing

The position of the runestone in relation to the reader influences the reading:

  • Upright: Embrace learning and actively use your knowledge to create
  • Merkstave (reversed): Are you stuck in the darkness, unsure what to do next?
  • Sideways: Why are you dimming your own light? What are you afraid of other people seeing?

How it should be read also depends on where it falls in relation to other runes.

  • Combined with Raidho – active pursuit of a journey or creative endeavor
